Hong Fook Mental Health Association was established in 1982 to address the mental health concerns in the East & Southeast Asian communities. Our vision is to help foster a multicultural community that understands mental health and accepts mental illness. Our mission is to work with Asian communities to keep people mentally healthy and manage mental illness from recovery to wellness, through promotion and prevention, treatment, capacity building and advocacy. We currently are able to work with the Cambodian, Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese communities, and serve the province of Ontario.
Our community-based and culturally competent services for people with mental illness include information services and referrals, short term support and counselling, case management services, self-help & mutual support groups, housing and support for people who are homeless or at high risk of becoming homeless, and English as a Second Language Class for consumers. Our case management services are available to Cambodian, Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese speaking individuals who are 16 years of age and over with mental health problems or a mental illness, live in Toronto, and consent voluntarily to service. Referrals are from individuals, families, friends, and health and social service providers.
Our Resource Centre provides consultation relating to mental health, culture and ethno-specific services; workshops and conferences on cultural competency care; a resource library; and organizes research and studies on mental health illnesses and related issues.
Our Family Initiatives Program provides consultation, counselling services, self-help & mutual support groups and education workshops.
Our Prevention and Promotion Program organizes community education on mental health issues, stress management workshops, education material in the languages of our target communities, collaborative community events and groups.
Our Volunteer Development Program hosts volunteer orientation and training, a wide scope of volunteer activity such as befriending people with mental illness; escorting persons living with mental illness; community events; fundraising activities; committee work; clerical duties; volunteer support group and volunteer recognition.
Our Asian Community Psychiatric Clinic helps clients to manage their mental illness through ethno-specific psychiatric consultations and nursing support.
Our affiliated HF Connecting Health Nurse Led Practitioner Clinic offers primary health care services for the Asian community. Our inter-professional team offer comprehensive primary care, illness prevention and health promotion, diagnosis and treatment of episodic and chronic illness, health assessment and primary mental health care.
