www.ahscpdx.orgAsian Health and Service Center (AHSC) has been serving the Asian communities of the Portland metropolitan area for over 30 years. Our mission is to be the bridge between Asian and American cultures and build a harmonious community. Our vision is to reduce health inequity and improve health care quality for all Asians. Most of our services specifically target new immigrants and low income families. Many new immigrant families lack knowledge of community resources, systems navigation, health insurance, and language skills to secure gainful employment. Thus, AHSC functions as the bridge that helps new immigrants make Oregon their home. All AHSC services are based on our Integrated & Holistic Services Model of Care, which has three components; Culturally Sensitive Community Engagement, Public Health Outreach and Empowerment and Health Care Services. The model integrates community engagement of our clients with existing healthcare services and “wraparound” support systems. This prevention-based model utilizes culturally specific programming to engage clients BEFORE they need immediate services. Once trust is established, AHSC’s dedicated staff introduce valuable information, empowers clients to manage their own health and other basic needs, enables clients access to resources, and encourages members of the community to seek help and learn prevention strategies. The foundation of AHSC services are culturally specific engagement activities, including weekly groups such as Chinese Opera Appreciation and Tai Chi, free senior Ethnic Lunch as well as annual cultural celebrations, which attract community members who might never seek social services. These activities create a culturally sensitive environment and help AHSC establish a trust-based relationship with community members, who can then rely on AHSC for support if they need it. AHSC currently has over 10,000 members from the Chinese (33%), Korean (26%), Vietnamese (26%), and other Asian communities (7%) in the Portland metro area and we provided close to 60,000 service encounters in 2013.Our out-patient mental health clinic is one of the two clinics in Oregon State that provide culturally specific services to Asian. Currently, we serve about 200 patients through a team of bilingual and bicultural qualified mental health professionals and psychiatrists.
